Jawid Kargger, Senior Director, Global Head of Sanctions, CIBC

Jawid is the Senior Director, Global Head of Sanctions at CIBC. Prior to joining CIBC, Jawid was the Vice-President, Sanctions Compliance at Citibank. He has over 10 years experience in Sanctions and AML Compliance across diverse industries including global financial institutions, consulting firms and government agencies. He has in-depth knowledge of global sanctions and compliance risk management.


HeidiKHeidi Kinkartz, Director, Global Sanctions, Scotiabank

Heidi is currently the Director, Global Sanctions in Scotiabank’s AML Risk Group, based in Toronto, Canada. In this role, she leads a team that is responsible for facilitating enterprise-wide compliance with Canadian and OFAC sanctions by providing expert advice and counsel on Scotiabank’s enterprise-wide sanctions program, client and transaction sanctions exposure, business line procedures and controls, the design of new products and services, as well as by delivering enterprise-wide advisory documents and guidance tools and business-specific sanctions training.

Before joining Scotiabank’s AML Risk Group, Heidi was Senior Legal Counsel in Scotiabank’s Legal Department supporting the Canadian retail bank and enterprise-wide insurance businesses.

Heidi holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto, an LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School (York University) and is called to the Ontario Bar.

Howard Mendelsohn

Howard Mendelsohn, Chief Client Officer, Kharon 

Howard works closely with business, compliance and legal professionals to strengthen programs and controls for managing financial crime risk. Howard has over two decades of experience in combatting illicit financial activity, in both the government and the private sector. Howard served at the US Treasury Department from 2001 to 2011, including as Deputy Assistant Secretary and Assistant Secretary (Acting) for Treasury’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis. Howard led Treasury’s intelligence functions, including oversight of analytical production, risk assessment, security, and strategic planning. Following his service at Treasury, Howard held leadership positions in Enterprise Compliance at PNC Financial Services Group. He is a recognized thought leader on Financial Crime matters and speaks regularly at conferences.

     

Diogo Palhano

Diogo Palhano, Account Director, Kharon 

Diogo leads Kharon’s engagement with financial institutions and corporates based in the Western Hemisphere. Diogo advises U.S. technology firms, Canadian banks and corporates, and major Latin American firms on sanctions-related risk typologies that impact commercial activity. Diogo worked at a French tech start-up company, where he was responsible for the firm’s expansion to German-speaking countries. Diogo also interned with the Association for the German Biofuel Industry and with the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research. Diogo is a graduate of HEC Paris and the Free University of Berlin, and is fluent in six languages.

Jacqueline D. Shinfield, Partner, Blakes 

Jacqueline’s practice focuses on all aspects of regulatory compliance in the retail financial services and payments industry at both the federal and provincial levels. She provides advice to regulated financial institutions and non-bank institutions, pay day loan companies, money services businesses, foreign exchange dealers, mobile payments service providers, digital currency exchanges and others. She has extensive experience providing advice in respect of Canada’s anti-money laundering and anti-terrorism financing legislation as well as Canadian sanctions legislation.

 

Joshua Shrager

Joshua Shrager, Senior Vice President, Kharon

Josh works with Kharon’s key clients on strategic initiatives and partnership opportunities. Prior to Kharon, Josh was a director at data analytics firm Quid, where he managed east coast and Europe client relations operations as well as directed company wide client engagement strategy and implementation. Previously, Josh served in the US Department of the Treasury as the Deputy Financial Attaché to Saudi Arabia as well as co-lead of the Iraq Threat Finance Cell in Baghdad. He also was a US Department of State Foreign Service Officer, with postings in Mexico and The Gambia, where he oversaw the embassy’s Public Affairs office.
